Kentucky Anesthesia Group is committed to delivering state-of-the-art anesthesia services in hospitals and surgery centers. If your weight is jeopardizing your health, bariatric surgery may be able to help you get on the right track.  Bariatric surgery is a medical weight loss option that can dramatically improve the quality of life.  The preoperative assessment of the patient is crucial in identifying and stratifying risk to ascertain the level of preoperative care required and the individual’s suitability for surgery.

Since bariatric surgery is always elective, there should be great effort given to a thorough evaluation prior to surgery, to make sure specific health problems are in the best possible shape.  Some of the comorbidities of obesity are hypertension, ischemic heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, sleep apnea, iron deficiency anemia, hyperglycemia, among other pathologies.  Patients seeking bariatric surgery should be considered as a higher anesthetic risk and therefore, should be thoroughly evaluated before bariatric surgery.  If more than one surgery is planned, a safe operative plan must be defined.  The anesthetic management is adjusted to the physical condition of the patient, the anatomical and physiological changes, as well as the surgical plan.

One of the most important things you can do to reduce the risks of anesthesia is talk with an anesthesiologist before surgery.  When it comes to bariatric anesthesia, our care team at Kentucky Anesthesia Group consists of 8 board certified anesthesiologists and 22 certified nurse anesthetists (CRNA).

Most bariatric surgeries are performed under general anesthesia with a breathing (endotracheal) tube.  In the vast majority of cases, the endotracheal tube is placed into your trachea after the induction of anesthesia, meaning you are completely asleep.  Throughout your procedure, a member of our anesthesia care team will be with you continuously.  One of our certified anesthesiologists will be involved in the entire care of the patient during induction and emergence from the anesthetic unless there are complications.

Our approach at Kentucky Anesthesia Group ensures that you will have multiple members of a team with advanced, overlapping and complementary skills present and available during your anesthetic care.  Our mission is to provide the highest quality specialty and subspecialty anesthesia care to our patients.
